Week 1

It is very hard to tell if kittens are male or female when they are so tiny. We knew that the 3 calicos were almost definitely females. You can read about that interesting fact here. Because the SPCA told us there were 4 females and 3 males we only really had to guess one of the females. And later on we found out we guessed correctly.

On day 2 we weighed them. The littlest one - who we guessed was a boy, weighed in at 70g. The biggest one - who got the nickname Fatso - weighed in at 115g.

We had to ditch the cat bed because the poor little guys would fall out of it, and they couldn't get anywhere on the plastic floor. We put a towel down on the bottom with blankets underneath for cushioning and put rolled up towels and blankets around the edges so they wouldn't fall out of the cage.

Here are some pictures from Week 1

PitaPata Cat tickers
Steve and I have volunteered at the SPCA since June 2010. We try to go every weekend to walk dogs. I am allergic to cats, but Steve really wanted one. We agreed that we would foster kittens for the SPCA to help the kittens, and to test how my allergies would be. We agreed that we wouldn't keep any kittens from the first litter because wanted to do it more than once. Along came Calliope and her kittens. They captured our hearts and there was no way we could give them all back.
